Stoic’s Prayer
Everything is right for me, which is right for you, O Universe.
Nothing for me is too early or too late, which comes in due time for you.
Everything is fruit to me which your seasons bring, O Nature.
From you are all things, in you are all things, to you all things return.-Marcus Aurelius
Steve Pavlina’s “If Everyone Awakens Will We All Starve?”
Steve Pavlina posted another great article yeserday, titled “If Everyone Awakens Will We All Starve?” in which he examines the idea question of what would happen to the world if everyone “woke up” and started living a life of purpose. I thought this was an interesting question and something I have thought about myself.
It actually reminds me of the situation that the character Mustafa Mond talked about in Aldous Huxley’s novel, Brave New World. In this utopian future that worships Ford and Freud, social castes are biologically engineered to create the perfect social structure. At the top are the members of the Alpha caste; they take care of all the highest level, intellectual work while the Betas, Deltas and Epsilons do technical or menial tasks. At one point in the novel, the World Controller, Mustafa Mond talks about an experiment that was done where 22,000 Alpha-Double-Plus individuals were sent to Cyprus, basically to see what would happen to a colony of leaders that had no followers. According to Mond, it did not turn out well. Over 80% were killed in just a few years in a civil war that erupted on the island.
I am also reminded of the “human sacrifices” in Chuck Palahniuk’s Fight Club. In this section of the book, the main character goes to a gas station in the middle of the night and drags out the 23-year-old attendant at gun point. The protagonist finds out that this young man once wanted to be a Veterinarian, but is now just working a dead-end job because school was too expensive. He takes the kid’s driver’s license and tells him that if he’s not on his way to becoming a Veterinarian in a few months, he would hunt him down and kill him, because “I’d rather kill you than see you working a shit job for just enough money to buy cheese and watch television.” You later find out that he has done this dozens, maybe hundreds, of times, and is having people all over the country do similar things.
Napoleon Hill also addressed this subject in his books and speeches. He said that only about 2% of people, at most, will do what is necessary to really make something better out of their lives and live with a true purpose. I tend to agree with that. That is the way the world has always worked. The world only needs a relatively few leaders to function.
Are you going to be one of those leaders?
O wonder!
How many goodly creatures are there here!
How beautious mankind is!
O brave new world,
That has such people in’t!
-Shakespeare
Trump: Think Like a Billionaire
Donald Trump’s book, Think Like a Billionaire: Everything You Need to Know About Success, Real Estate, and Life (released October 2004) is entertaining and eccentric as all his books are. The first part has a decent amount of interesting and perhaps even useful information, then he transitions into a segment describing a week of his life (this has been popular in his previous books) before plunging into a long segment that starts off talking about the the First Season of Apprentice and ends up advertising the Second Season of Apprentice.
The first part of the book contained some marginally practical advice about how to deal with contractors, how to select a personal financial advisor and how to deal with bankers. It also includes Trump’s opinions on grooming and dressing, though this includes the cliché phrase, “dress for the job you want, not the job you have.”* Mr. Trump also included a brief explanation of his “Mar-a-Lago Diet,” which is a guide for how his personal chef prepares his meals.
The section on a week of his life was not that eventful but, as always, filled with the constant name dropping, almost to a point that hints at insecurity. Yes, we know you talk to a lot of famous people. But it always makes me think of that scene…
I’m kind of a big deal… People know me.

It is not Trump’s best book, but worth checking out. I have the paperback and audio book versions. You can buy it here.
*According to the information in this book, Donald Trump would not take me seriously as a businessman. I have long, somewhat messy hair and I dress in all black clothes that are comfortable and functional. Though I guess this is my way of dressing for “the job I want” which is simply as an ever-developing entrepreneur. For me, it is more important to be an individual and not let someone tell me how I have to dress to be successful.
The 576 Megapixel Camera
Apparently the human eye has been calculated to have the resolution equivalent of 576 megapixels. They admit that this is not a perfectly accurate measurement because of the differences between a geometrically perfect electronic device and it’s biological counterpart, but I found this post interesting.
MilkSucks.com
I came across MilkSucks.com recently, and I found the site interesting, informative and entertaining, as such obvious propaganda. It certainly makes no attempts to seem unbiased. It is a PETA supported site that was created with the intention of scaring it’s viewers into becoming vegetarians. So you cannot take the information completely seriously, but in general, it is probably fairly accurate.
The site does include a wide variety of information. The main pages has a general overview of why milk and the milk-producing industry are bad for Animals, the Environment and your Health. The “Living Dairy-Free” section includes recommendations for products to help you remove milk from your diet. The “Find Out More” section includes information about links between milk and certain diseases and conditions, such as allergies, obesity, and diabetes as well as links to fact sheets and studies on the effects of milk. There is also links to a free vegetarian starter kit and the site GoVeg.com.
Dairy products are a health hazard. They contain no fiber or complex carbohydrates and are laden with saturated fat and cholesterol. … Dairy products are linked to allergies, constipation, obesity, heart disease, cancer, and other diseases.

In the interest of full disclosure, I am not a vegetarian myself, but after some health problems a few years ago I started incorporating certain vegetarian items into my diet. I have always been disgusted by the taste of milk and I found that I liked soy milk, so that was an easy transition for me. I have not had a glass of milk in probably 5 years at least though I do still eat cheese and ice cream occasionally.
